1877 Tax List for Appomattox County, Virginia

This record shows John Robinson (often mispelled Robertson) as owner of his home/ business and the 3.25 acres it sat on at Appomattox Court House valued at $325.

John Robinson was born into slavery in 1847. For John, freedom came on April 9th of 1865. Within six years, that freedom would see John buy his own home, operate his own cobbler's shop from his basement for over 50 years, become a founding member of Galilee Baptist Church, and vote. John and at least four other family members are buried in the small cemetery behind the house that was their home.
